Once Upon a Time in America

Here's another photo from my trip to the States. This was taken on my birthday of a view that I'm sure has been photographed many times before - it was even the movie poster for a film I can't remember the name of...

I would love to know in what order the three elements in this photograph were constructed - the street, the Manhattan Bridge, and the Empire State Building (poking through the bottom). Did they design the street to look straight through the bridge at the building? Or did they design the bridge last? Or was it all a happy accident?
